Sheryl D. Clark, M.D. is one of New York City’s

Microneedling represents a combination of technical innovation and a deep understanding of our body’s structure. This non-surgical cosmetic treatment can boost collagen and elastin while also healing your skin. When performed by an experienced dermatologist, it can provide a rejuvenated look and feel to skin on the face or other parts of your body.
About Microneedling
Age, sun exposure, and genetics might try to harm your skin, but modern medicine is prepared to help you fight back. With minimally-invasive procedures like microneedling in NYC, you can refresh your skin without the need for a single incision. Where surgery cuts and reorients your body, microneedling works with its natural functions to boost your appearance and self-confidence.
How Can Microneedling Improve Your Skin?
Microneedling takes advantage of your body’s natural collagen-producing mechanisms. Using a special eclipse micropen evo at the tip of which is a disposable applicator with its tiny needles which more in and out 1000 times per minute. This treatment creates a large number of small punctures across the treatment area. While this might sound intimidating, it actually causes your body to react in a positive way. In response to these small punctures, your body begins producing more collagen and elastin. Both of these materials are vital for keeping skin tight and healthy. As we age, the production of these proteins drops off, but microneedling can kick start it back up. The treatment also allows us to introduce beneficial agents into the skin, such as hyaluronic acid, Botulinum Toxin and Vitamin C or Tranexamic acid.
What Problems & Areas Can Microneedling Treat?
Though microneedling is used on the face most often, it can treat skin concerns around the body as well. Common concerns that microneedling can improve include:
- Acne and acne scarring.
- Dark spots or uneven skin tone, including sunspots and melasma, especially when used with tranexamic acid
- Large pores
- Minor scars
- Damaged skin, including sun damage
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Stretch marks, especially when used with biostimulatory, dermal fillers like Sculptra.
Other popular treatment areas include the neck, chest, stomach and thighs.
What Is the Treatment Like?
Though the treatment involves needles, it actually is both fast and quite tolerable for most patients. In fact, treatments typically take under half an hour, depending on your unique plan. To start, we apply a numbing cream to the treatment area to keep you comfortable from start to finish. During your treatment, you may notice a slight stinging sensation, but rarely more than that.
Your physician glides the microneedling tool carefully across the treatment area. There may be minor splotches of blood as the pen does make small punctures. However, any bleeding stops quite quickly in all cases.
After your treatment, you are free to return to your daily routine. However, since there can be redness, minor swelling, and minor spots of bleeding, many patients prefer to take at least the first day off. Everyone heals at their own rate, but most patients return to work in 24-36 hours and should be fully healed within about one week of their treatment session.
Is Microneedling Right for Me?
Microneedling is an excellent way for a wide range of patients to improve their skin’s look and texture. For patients who want to treat a range of skin concerns, this treatment can help you achieve your goals without the need for invasive surgery. The first step to see if microneedling is right for you is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Clark. Patients who have developed keloid scars in the past might benefit from a different rejuvenation treatment, such as laser skin resurfacing. However, this treatment can actually benefit patients who have minor scarring of other types.
When Can I See Results?
Microneedling is a gradual process, so the time it takes to see results can vary. While many patients will see significant improvement after even one treatment, most patients require between 4-6 sessions to fully reach their goals. With each additional treatment, pigment become more even pores become tighten and your body’s collagen and elastin levels continue to increase, resulting in skin that bost looks and feels years younger. It is important to keep in mind that while microneedling provides impressive results, it takes time for them to arrive. As your body continues to produce more collagen after each treatment, you should see additional improvements in the weeks to come.
Unfortunately, the aging process never stops, and the sun is always at war with our skin. For these reasons, we recommend patients come in at regular intervals for touchup treatments to maintain their results and keep their skin vibrant. As part of your treatment plan, Dr. Clark can let you know what your ideal touchup schedule would look like.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?
Patients see a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. The micropen can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation as well as uneven skin tone, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks. Recently patients with balding have seen impressive regrowth of hair with several treatments.
What areas of the body can I treat?
The micropen can be used on all parts of the body, including the: face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, back and scalp.
How is the procedure performed?
A sterile tip containing 12 tiny micro-tips is attached to the micropen. Your skincare professional will apply either hyaluronic acid or PRP and select the appropriate treatment pen settings based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. Several passes will be performed.
What does microneedling feel like?
The feeling associated with the micropen is anything from no sensation other than a feeling of something being glided across the skin to a prickling sensation. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating cartridge tip makes the treatment comfortable. Some patients, especially if we are treating deeper issues such as scars or stretch marks, elect to have a topical anesthetic applied prior to the procedure.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes 15-60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
Is there downtime with Microneedling?
Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total recovery time depends on the position of the pen and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, patients are red for 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in 8 to 24 hours.
When will I see results?
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment.
How many treatments do I need?
Some patients only require a single treatment once a year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 4 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. For patients with concerns about deep wrinkles, advanced photoaging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals.
What is the aftercare?
You will be able to wash the treated area about six hours after the procedure. You should avoid sweating and exercise for 24 hours. We recommend the use of a topical dermal rejuvenation system beginning the day of the treatment.
