At MD Skin Science, our team is dedicated to helping our patients look and feel better about their skin every day of their life. We aim to provide top-of-the-line cosmetic and non-surgical treatments to our patients to help them achieve clear and healthy skin free from warts or unwanted growths.

What Are Warts?

Warts appear as small bumps on your skin, usually with a thick and hard outer layer. They can appear almost anywhere on your body, resulting from excess cell growth caused by one of many varieties of HPV (human papillomavirus). Despite what you might have heard, no, you cannot get warts from touching frogs or toads, just to be clear.

Warts can pop up anywhere on your skin, but hands and feet are the most common areas they appear. Anyone exposed to HPV can run the risk of getting warts, but a few factors make you more susceptible to developing them. Specifically, if you have habits or conditions that make it easier for the virus to enter your body, you have a higher chance of getting warts. These include:

  • Chronic skin conditions (e.g., eczema)
  • Habits such as biting nails or picking at skin

What Is the Treatment Like?

Getting warts removed is often a straightforward process. However, what your treatment looks like will depend on the type of your wart and its location.

Types of warts we can treat include:

  • Common warts
  • Plantar warts
  • Flat warts
  • Filiform warts

Depending on your type of wart, we can build a treatment plan that will provide the best results. Treatment options might include freezing the wart, excising it, laser therapy, or other options. In every case, you can fully consult with Dr. Clark to find the right treatment for you.

Freezing a Wart Off (Cryosurgery)

This treatment is highly effective for removing common warts. However, this treatment is more ideal for older children or adults, because there is some discomfort during the treatment. We use liquid nitrogen to freeze the tissue of the wart, destroying the cells. In some cases, you may see your results after a single session, but larger more persistent warts might require more than one treatment session.

Salicylic Acid

Using high-grade salicylic acid can also prove an effective treatment. Dr. Clark can provide you with complete instructions on how to remove warts using prescribed salicylic acid.

Cutting Out a Wart

Using either a precise instrument or a laser, we can fully remove a large range of warts. We ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the process. This treatment is usually tried only if other methods have not worked.

Should I Have My Wart Removed?

While warts can sometimes go away on their own, waiting for treatment isn’t always a good idea. In many cases, a wart might actually grow larger while you wait for it to go away. So if you have a wart, we recommend coming in for a professional opinion. Dr. Clark can fully examine your wart and medical history to see if you should have the wart removed or not. Fortunately, wart removal treatments are generally quite straightforward and do not require any real downtime on the patient’s part. You can have a wart removed and return to your daily life right away.

When Can I See Results?

For cryosurgery or surgical removal of a wart, you can see results right away. However, some larger warts might require more than one cryotherapy session. Non-surgical wart removal can be more gradual, but you should see your results improving consistently across the treatment period.

However, there is currently no cure for HPV, so you may have the chance to develop more warts in the future. Dr. Clark can provide you with care tips to minimize the risk of developing more warts. If you do develop more warts, we are here to help you treat them as soon as possible before they can grow larger.
