Laser to the Rescue!

Is there anyone out there who doesn’t hate those new brown spots showing up on the backs of our arms, our hands, our face or other areas? Maybe you spent too much time in the sun, or you just inherited the tendency to get them from your parents. What about the spider veins growing like weeds on your neck, or the little telangiectasias all over your face? If these or similar spots bother you, you can get rid of them now, safely and quickly without serious side effects, with laser treatment.

Lasers can eliminate blood vessels and brown spots of the face and body because lasers produce coherent light at specific wavelengths, which is preferentially absorbed by specific targets. This is called “ selective photothermolysis,” and the target for brown spots is melanin and for blood vessels is hemoglobin. This means that the melanin in various types of brown spots, and the hemoglobin in blood vessels, will absorb the laser energy, become hot, and die, while the laser light passes through other tissues harmlessly.

Alexandrite and NdYag laser energies are absorbed by the melanin in moles, freckles, hair and seborrheic keratoses. The light produced by these lasers can also be absorbed by hemoglobin in small blood vessels in the face, larger blood vessels on the legs, cherry angiomas, and red or purple scars.

At MD Skin Science, Dr. Clark can treat your moles, freckles, seborrheic keratoses, scars, cherry angiomas, birthmarks and unwanted hair with one of these two lasers. You can also sign up for the latest facial rejuvenation treatment, Laser Genesis. During this treatment you will have 8000 to 9000 tiny pulses of laser energy delivered very quickly over a few minutes, to get rid of brown spots and red and blue vessels via selective photothermolysis, PLUS create new collagen and elastic fibers, improving fine lines and wrinkles and getting rid of any background facial redness via bulk heating.

The device employed for all of these treatments is the Cutera Excel, a state-of-the art combination laser device which is far more powerful than its predecessors. It has a sapphire tip which is cooled and placed on the skin before the laser is fired, making the procedures very comfortable, unlike devices used in the past. Dr. Clark will ensure that you heal without scarring or discoloration.
